Due to topographical issues, impassable roads, easements, and unmapped lines, much of the grid is impossible to assess. A report prepared by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Electricity Delivery and Energy Reliability estimates the total cost of weather related outages at approximately $47 billion annually.
In 2015, there were over 19,000 reports of severe weather incidents, according to NOAA Storm Prediction Center. These incidents are on the rise. In 2000, there were an average of 2.5 weather-related grid disruption events per month. By 2013, that number grew to an average of 14.5 disruption events per month. While these numbers seem staggering, consider that they only take into account power outages affecting 50,000 consumers or more.
